Join us for Rethinking Education, an event where we take a step back from our day-to-day concerns and consider the meaning and purpose of education in our unique historical moment.
More and more people are coming to understand that humanity is living through a time of ecological breakdowns and societal disruptions that will only intensify in the coming years and decades. Yet, this awareness is still limited to a relatively small group of individuals, and our most important institutions are still functioning on outdated assumptions. As a result, formal education is now increasingly out of step with reality. This is creating a massive and growing gap between what students need to learn and what they are being taught. For educators, such a gap represents a spiritual and moral crisis, for it puts into question the very meaning of their lives and the value of their work.
This workshop is designed primarily for schoolteachers and college professors, but it will also benefit anyone associated with formal education, at any level and in any capacity. The workshop consists of a presentation on the state of the world and the responsibility of educators, followed by a guided discussion. The workshop is led by Dr. Ahmed Afzaal, an associate professor in the Religion Department at Concordia College in Moorhead, MN, and the author of Teaching at Twilight: The Meaning of Education in the Age of Collapse.
