Ceasefire Now!
February 14, 2024
On Saturday, February 10, eighteen Franciscan Sisters and Cojourners (lay associates) performed “Neighborly Fence Work” at Assisi Heights, gathering as a public call to work for justice and peace in the Holy Land and throughout the world. We hope all who pass by the intersection of Assisi Heights Drive and 14th Street will join in these efforts. Every small step can stop the devastating war now in process before our eyes.
Christian Churches begin Lent on Ash Wednesday, February 14. Traditionally, three communal practices are associated with this season: prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. They are practiced so hearts of stone may be transformed into hearts eager for the Reign of God here and now. They are intended to clear away clutter, comforts, and noise so that we may see, feel, and hear the cries of the marginalized and poor in our own country. Our magnificent Universe, home for all, is in peril because of the evil of war-making and thinking. Pope Francis speaks this truth: “War is always a failure of the human heart. It only destroys; it does not bring peace.”
“Ceasefire Now!” is our Communal Lenten prayer. Let us refuse ignorance and fear. Rather, let us speak a Word, the Word of God, that is truthful and heals all. May we be steadfast in our efforts.
