Pope Francis calls all the baptized to Missionary Discipleship. This retreat will explore the nature of discipleship, the call of Jesus, and the cost of following The Way. We will look at the Synoptic gospels, at both men and women disciples, and at the implications of discipleship for our own daily lives, whoever and wherever we may be.
Dr. Anthony (Tony) Gittins is from Manchester, England, and a Religious of the Congregation of the Holy Spirit (Spiritans). He was trained as a Social Anthropologist and spent a decade as missionary with the Mende people of Sierra Leone, West Africa. Subsequently, he taught Missiology/Anthropology at the Missionary Institute, London; and since 1984 at Catholic Theological Union, Chicago. Currently, as Emeritus Professor of Theology and Culture, he spends most of his time as itinerant retreat preacher and presenter of seminars and short courses, with emphasis on Intercultural Living and Missionary Discipleship.
Gospel: Lens for Living Retreat – Part 2:
Engaging the Women of John’s Gospel in Our Spiritual Journey
Presenter: Dr. Catherine Cory
Sunday, May 21 (6:30 pm) thru Wednesday, May 24, 2023 (12:00 pm) Central Time
Deadline for event is April 28
The Gospel of John is unique among the New Testament gospels in both content and style. Its beautifully poetic prologue invites the reader to dig deeply into the significance of its characters and their symbolic meaning for its readers. During this retreat time, we will focus on the female characters of John’s gospel. How does its author portray their disposition toward Jesus, their discipleship, and their ministry? How might they inform our own spiritual journey into union with the divine and orient our hearts toward a deeper understanding of our calling to proclaim the Good News with our lives?
Dr. Catherine Cory is professor emerita of New Testament at the University of Saint Thomas in St. Paul, MN. She received her M.A. from St. John’s University in Collegeville, and her Ph.D. in Christianity and Judaism in Antiquity from the University of Notre Dame. Her areas of specialization are the Gospel of John and the Book of Revelation. She taught biblical studies at the graduate and undergraduate levels for many years, but her favorite venues are in parishes and adult faith formation settings. In addition to more academic publications, Cathy has written for Bible Today, the “At Home with the Word” series and the “Workbook for Lectors, Gospel Readers and Proclaimers of the Word” series. She is anticipating the publication of a new book, Women in the New Testament, for Liturgical Press’ Little Rock Scripture series.
Presenters will be in person at Assisi Heights, hosting two conferences per day, (livestreamed via Zoom), at 9am & 3:30pm, with Liturgy at 11:00am. Full schedule will be sent with registration confirmation.
