“We gather for worship with our own Sisters and with the people from Rochester who come to Assisi Heights for song. There’s something about music that interests the souls of everyone and unites the souls, lifts them up.”

Answering the Call

“I think for me, I just started to learn how to love God more. And so that’s what I told my mother when I signed up. I wanted to love God more and she said to me, “You can love God anywhere” and I said, “Well, I think I want to be a Franciscan.”

“Why become a Franciscan Sister? I just think it’s a great way for young women, or older women, to look at life in a different way and to know that they would be supported in their spiritual quest.”

“I think my ministry has impacted me more than it has impacted other people. I have come to know myself more deeply. I used to be a shy, introverted person, afraid of things. God has pushed me into situations so that I have had to become more involved with people, to see the beauty of other people, and it’s been such a grace and such a gift.”

“I was always in teaching… grade schools, high schools, and then at the College of Saint Teresa. I managed the Archives for the College of Saint Teresa right up until the age of 87.”

The Impact of Her Ministry

“Oh, I suppose we never know till all is revealed in some future time. Even as late as last year, I got telephone calls from students I had many years ago. So somehow or other, there must have been something. And I’m sure there also were some times I may have not lived up to what was expected. But in the classroom, or in the office, it’s a matter of starting each day with a desire to do what God wants to the best of your ability, and sometimes things that I thought were a failure turned into some of the best successes.”

Commitment and Responsibility

“Sometimes in prayer, I imagine myself as a piece of clay in the potter’s hand being transformed and fashioned into something more beautiful for God’s sake. That has helped me adjust to the changes of ministry, because I know that God is doing the transformation. What it has led me to is to understand that I’m responding to God. That I have a responsibility, should we say, to influence the goodness of society.”

Serving God and the Community

“Oh, I think the greatest reward is when you can serve another. I often say when I’m working with the Sisters on the skilled care floor that I benefit much more than they do. To get them to smile, to laugh, to chuckle. I mean, that’s a great reward for me.”
