Since its beginning in 1889, a chapel has been part of Saint Mary’s Hospital. The original hospital included a simple chapel on the third floor. During the first expansion of the hospital in 1893, a larger chapel with an outside entrance was constructed on the first floor. With the third addition to the hospital in 1903, the first permanent chapel was built. This 1903 chapel now forms the narthex to the present chapel. No longer able to accommodate the crowds, another plan started in 1930 and the first services began in 1933. In this virtual tour, you’ll learn the architectural features and the many religious symbols hidden in the wainscoted walls and windows.
Renee E. Ziemer, Mayo Historical Unit Coordinator for the W. Bruce Fye Center for History of Medicine will lead the virtual tour.
