The Black Church Archives Project (BCAP) is a digital humanities initiative focused on preserving and sharing the historical records of African American churches, including photographs, sermons, letters, recordings, and other archival materials. The project recognizes Black churches as important keepers of cultural, political, and community history while making these often-overlooked records more accessible for research and storytelling. One featured project, Breathe: A Story of Race, Religion, and Justice in South Minneapolis Told Through Black Church Archives, uses digital archives, oral histories, and documentary film to tell the story of St. Peter’s African Methodist Episcopal Church in Minneapolis. The film traces the legacy of John Wallace, a formerly enslaved man who later helped found Brown’s Chapel AME Church in Hastings, Minnesota, preserving the memory of a once-thriving Black community whose history had largely been forgotten.
