An unexpected trip to the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is soul changing. Franciscan Sister Joan Brown will share about her experience of this sacred place that the Gwichin people call, “the sacred place where life begins”. She will share about why five faith leaders were invited by the American Land Project to travel with bush pilots to camp at Sunset Pass on the Coastal Plains three degrees above the Arctic Circle at Solstice Time, June 2026. You will be invited to learn why this “keystone place” connects each of us to the far north and what we can do to protect this vast, wild, and holy place from oil and gas development. Sister Joan is a member of the Franciscan Sisters of Rochester, Minnesota who lives and works in New Mexico. She is a founder of New Mexico and El Paso Interfaith Power and Light who has worked on climate justice for decades and continues to focus on extractivism issues of oil and gas, uranium, water and the escalation of nuclear weapons and waste.
