The murder of George Floyd, three miles from our home, mobilized our privileged, bi-racial family. We each view inequality and racism from many different angles. We each participated in a movement for change in a different way. I will share personal stories of my family’s journey through the chaos and grief that forced me to come to terms with my own racial biases.
Shelly Gill Murray is a writer, an ambassador for organ donation, a mission based world traveler and jail volunteer. She is a story slam participant on the The Moth and her essays can be found in Gotham Writers, San Fedele Press’ e-book Art in the Time of COVID-19, Minnesota Women’s Press, pathwaystochildren.org, caringbridge.org, Adoptive Families magazine, and AAA Travel Magazine. She lives near Lake Harriet, which she has looped nearly 7,000 times since moving to Minneapolis, MN.
