The Irish have many stories to tell! February 1, the Celtics toast to a woman, St. Brigid of Ireland with the many legends, myths, and folklore about her life. The pagan feast, Imbolc is celebrated on this day with the lighting of fires. Gaelic tradition Christianized this day in honor of St. Brigid, marking the beginning of spring- halfway between winter solstice and spring equinox. She is the patron of babies, blacksmiths, boatmen, and beer. She is said to have miraculously changed water into beer and provided enough beer for 18 churches from a single barrel. She is pictured with fire and a Celtic cross customarily braided each year on this feast day and hung on the rafters to protect the household from fire. Last year’s crosses are thrown in the fire. Sister Patricia will continue the Irish stories while we lift a glass to Brigid’s spirit.
Sister Patricia George, OSF was born in Ireland and adopted at almost three to a couple in Chicago, IL. She is a mother, grandmother, active in social justice issues, Spiritual Director, restorative justice advocate, adjunct graduate level professor at California State University in Sacramento, CA, hospice worker, and clinical therapist! Her Irish heritage is alive and well.
