An overview of Dakota history from four Elders of the last known Dakota bands in the Rochester area will be presented, including the Dakota Conflict and efforts to restore the spiritual nature of the Indian Heights Park area.
Valerie DeCora Guimaraes is an enrolled member of the Ho-Chunk Nation with Dakota ancestry. Valerie has a doctorate in nursing practice with a specialty in Transcultural Nursing Leadership. Valerie works solely with Native American patients at Mayo Clinic. She also has a passion for social justice issues with respect to reconciliation efforts, health equity, and education regarding the Dakota and Ho-Chunk people.
