Today we gather with an alert mind to voice the pain and suffering we experienced in 2020. Lament is designed to address God, in naming the deep ache that permeates our life and world. We have witnessed a profound sense of loss and anxiety that challenges our faith and erodes our spirit.

Losses by death, job, health insurance, freedom of movement, insecurity regarding safety, food and the collapse of our social norms must be grieved. We feel displaced, replaced, or alienated. The sense of loss is universal; the lament is particular and personal. “The voicing of public lament is a prerequisite for beginning again in hope.” -Walter Brueggemann
