This presentation focuses on the theme of mercy and compassion in the writings of Saint Francis of Assisi. It will especially highlight this theme in Francis’ Testament, Earlier Rule (1221), Letter to the Minister, and Canticle of the Creatures. Mercy/compassion is the lens to interpret Francis’ entire life and will be shown to be the epicenter of Franciscan spirituality. The presentation will lead to a discussion on how this theme of Francis’ spirituality can help us discern how to receive and give God’s mercy in the world of today.
