Hear My Voice: A Chaplain-Led Spiritual Legacy Pilot Study for Patients with Advanced Diseases was first developed for people with brain cancers or other neurologic illnesses. This group was often deeply concerned that their cognition and memory would be compromised and that they wouldn’t have time to communicate to their loved ones what was most meaningful to them. This study was intended to facilitate that communication and create a personal spiritual legacy for each participant. They later expanded the admission criteria to include others with any advanced disease so they too, could have this opportunity.
In a semi-structured interview with a chaplain, each Hear My Voice participant individually reviewed his or her life through a spiritual lens. They recalled memories of important people and experiences from all stages of their lives. They discussed things they were proud of, areas of struggle, and kernels of wisdom they had gathered. Participants were very happy with their experience and data suggests that their quality of life and spiritual and emotional wellbeing improved following the receipt of their spiritual legacy.
The aims of this presentation are 1) to briefly describe the Hear My Voice project, including wisdom and guidance shared by those in the study, and 2) to discuss and encourage ways of adapting Hear My Voice for personal use with oneself and/or others.
Katherine (Kate) Piderman was born and raised in Vancouver, B.C., Canada, but has lived in the Midwestern United States most of her adult life. She has masters’ degrees in counseling, pastoral ministry and scripture, and a PhD in psychology. After retiring from chaplaincy in 2017, Kate has continued in a research role at Mayo, completing the Hear My Voice spiritual legacy project for those with advanced illnesses.
