Through nearly two millennia of the history of biblical interpretation, the women of the New Testament get little attention except when they are portrayed as sinners and supplicants. In fact, their lives were far more complex and filled with ambiguity. In Christian circles, their subordination to men was justified on the basis of Eve’s role in bringing evil and sin into the world. However, if we dig deeply into their stories, the women of the New Testament are more often presented as heroines and models of the ideal Christian life. They held roles of leadership within early church communities, even while early church writers argued against their right to do so. In three sessions, we will examine some of these New Testament stories to see what they tell us about the “real lives” of women in the earliest period of the Christian church. Perhaps we will discover that their lives were not all that different from our own.
