high on a hill in Northwest Rochester, Assisi Heights Italian
Romanesque structure bears a striking resemblance to the
Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi in Italy. Situated on 100
acres in the heart of the city it is home to the Sisters of
Saint Francis. Visitors are welcomed to an ornate lobby with
slate floor, Italian marble columns, and hand blown stained
glass windows from Germany. Under the leadership of Mother
Alfred Moes, the sisters were instrumental in establishing St.
Marys Hospital--the first hospital in Rochester predating the
Mayo Clinic.
